The sidebar

The sidebar runs down the left of the workspace, and you decide what goes in it. It's built from widgets, stacked one under the other. Out of the box it holds just one, the actions - Home, Search, New Note, Flow, Graph and Timeline - with Settings and customise at its foot. Press ⌘S to hide or show it.

Customise it

Click customise at the foot of the sidebar, or right-click any widget and choose Customise Sidebar…. The page beside the sidebar becomes a gallery of every widget in every size, each drawn with your own notes.

  • Add a widget by clicking it in the gallery, or drag it to the spot you want in the sidebar.
  • Move one by dragging its card up or down the sidebar.
  • Remove one with the - on its card, or by dragging it back onto the gallery.
  • Change its size by clicking the other size in the gallery. The sidebar holds one of each widget.

Click done or press Esc when you're finished. reset, at the top of the gallery, puts the sidebar back the way it started.

A widget's options

Every widget keeps its options on its back. While customising, click a card to turn it over. The rest of the time, right-click a widget and choose Edit - the same menu has Remove. Click done to turn it back.

A widget's height comes from its options, not from your notes, so the widgets below it stay put as your library changes.

The widgets

Actions - Home, Search, New Note, Flow, Graph and Timeline, as a list or as a row of icons. Hover an icon for its name and key. On the back, tick the ones you want and drag them into your own order. One that doesn't apply where you are, like Flow outside a markdown note, is greyed out rather than hidden.

Recent - your notes, newest first, under Today, Yesterday, This Week and Earlier. The note you're on is red. The back chooses which date counts - opened (the default), edited or created - and how tall it is: five, eight or twelve lines. When a line is left over at the bottom, the next group waits there behind its count. Click it to unfold it.

Calendar - a month or a single week. Days with notes carry a dot, larger the more notes they hold. Click a day to list its notes underneath, and if it has room to spare, the list carries on into the days before. Today is blue and the day you've picked is red. The chevrons page back and forth, clicking the title jumps back to the current month or week, and the arrow keys move between days. The back chooses which date it counts by. It starts on edited, so it doesn't repeat what Recent shows.

Tags - your most-used tags with their counts, like the Tags section on Home. Click one to open its tag page. The back shows up to six, twelve or twenty, most used first or a to z.

Explorer - find notes by combining tags. Click a tag on its shelf to pick it, and the list below narrows to the notes that carry every tag you've picked. The figure above draws each pick as a pentagon, with the number of notes where they all overlap. Hover a tag's name and its pentagon turns red. Click a name beside the figure to take that tag back out. With nothing picked, the list shows your untagged notes.

The shelf only offers tags that would narrow the list further - the ten most used, with see all for the rest. The back sets how many tags the shelf shows (five, ten, twenty or every tag) and orders the notes newest first or a to z. The Explorer grows with your library, so it always sits last, and it remembers your picks.
